CALL TO WORSHIP
(Tune –‘How Firm A Foundation’ #268)
Words by John Ryland, 1775 Based on Psalm 124

AD not the Lord, my soul may cry,
Had not the Lord been on my side;
Had He not brought deliverance nigh,
Then must my helpless soul have died.
Had not the Lord been on my side,
My soul had been by Satan slain;
And Tophet, opening large and wide,
Would not have gaped for me in vain.
Lo, floods of wrath, and floods of hell,
In fierce impetuous torrents roll;
Had not the Lord defended well,
The waters had o’erwhelm’d my soul.
As when the fowler’s snare is broke,
The bird escapes on cheerful wings;
My soul, set free from Satan’s yoke,
With joy bursts forth, and mounts, and sings.
She sings the Lord her Savior’s praise;
Sings forth His praise with joy and mirth;
To Him her song in heaven she’ll raise,
To Him that made both heaven and earth!

HRIST is the only way to God the Father. His blood alone has put away sin. His imputed righteousness alone has made His people accepted. You cannot improve upon His righteousness by any so-called “progressive sanctification.” You either have His righteousness and His righteousness alone and therefore accepted in the beloved, or you stand condemned in your own self-righteousness.
If any part of your salvation depends on your work, you are hopelessly lost. His grace alone gives the believer access into the presence of God. He perfectly fulfilled the law of God on behalf of His elect. By imputation the sins of all the elect were laid on Him. Christ “was numbered with the transgressor, and He bare the sin of many.” He voluntarily undertook to be the Substitute and Surety of His elect. By this way and this way only, by the transferring of sin from the sinner to Christ at the cross, the sinner ceases to be regarded as a sinner, his guilt is removed, and he is declared justified before the throne of grace. THE UNITY OF THE CROSS

HE proper way to describe the state of Old Testament believers, is that they waited for the Hope of Israel, the Lord Jesus Christ, who would fulfill fully and finally all the promises of forgiveness, justification, and reconciliation revealed to them under the Old covenant through the types and ceremonies. That is not to imply that the Gospel was any less revealed in them nor believed on by them. The writer to the Hebrews in chapter 4:2 is specific in stating that THE GOSPEL was preached unto them, even as unto us, i.e. the same Gospel, only theirs being through type, picture, and prophet, and ours through the full, completed, work of the Lord Jesus.
There are some who would make a distinction in the way that the Old Testament elect were waved versus those in the New Testament, however a careful study of the Scriptures shows that all of God’s elect are saved in the same manner, and that by the blood and righteousness of the Lord Jesus Christ alone!
1. The Old Testament elect, in whom the very Spirit of God dwelt, looked forward to the coming, doing and dying of the Lord Jesus as their only salvation – I Peter 1:10, 11. We by the grace of God look back to the same point historically, for the establishment of our righteousness and the imputation of it before God there in THE DEATH OF THE LORD JESUS.
2. They and we were all made perfect, reconciled unto God at the same time according to passages of Scripture such as Colossians 2:14, 156 and Hebrews 11:40 – “god having provided some better thing for us, that they without us should not be made perfect (fulfilled, completed, finished). KJV)

CLEANSING FROM ALL SIN
I John 1:7

he Blood of Jesus Christ cleanses from all sin – not only for our omissions of duty, but for our duties themselves; not only for our prayerlessness, but for our prayers; not only for our long rejection, but for our sins in coming to Him; not only for our unbelief but for our faith; not only for our past enmity, but for our present, cold-hearted love; not only for the sins we bring to Christ, but for our way of bringing them; for the impure motives that defiled our service, and also for the sin mingling with our worship. SALVATION

HEN is salvation? Does it take place in eternity, or in time? It is important that we understand when salvation is. While the Bible clearly shows that God’s purpose to save His chosen and predestined people in Christ is eternal, the divine testimony is abundant and clear, that all the work of their full and glorious salvation unto holiness and a blissful immortality is begun and ended in time. This triple work of the Father, Son and Spirit, three in One, consists in redemption, regeneration and resurrection. The resurrection of all the redeemed and heaven-born people of God shall take place at the last day of time. And so Christ said of all the church, that the Father’s will is that “I should lose nothing, but should raise it up again at the last day.” And of every believer in Him He says, “And I will raise him up at the last day.” The last day is a part of time. The resurrection of all the dead, who sleep in Christ, is the completion and crowning glory of their salvation. This is in time.
Redemption from the law of sin and death, by the death of the Son of God, is in time. So is salvation by His risen life in time. Paul says, “While we were yet sinners, Christ died for us. Much more then being now justified by His blood, we shall be saved form wrath through Him. For if when we were enemies, we were reconciled to God by the death of His Son, much more, being reconciled, we shall be saved by His life.” This salvation by His life includes being born again, and passing from death unto life. “Except a man be born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God.” “Whosoever believeth that Jesus is the Christ is born of God.” All this is wrought in time. Paul therefore says, “He which hath begun a good work in you will perform it until the day of Jesus Christ.” That is, until the full revelation of Christ in you in His resurrection, power and glory. Until that glorious day, God will perform the good work of salvation in you.
O this is assuring and blessed, by beloved! In this faith Paul said, “For I reckon that the sufferings of this present time are not worthy to be compared with the glory which shall be revealed in us.” This is the full glory of our ascended Lord Jesus Christ. God, who exalted Him at His own right hand of Power, will perform His blessed work of salvation in us until the redemption of the purchased possession. “Then we shall be like Him; for we shall see Him as He is.”
