CALL TO WORSHIP
(Tune –‘From Every Stormy Wind That Blows’ #355)
Words by Henry Francis Lyte, 1834 Based on Psalm 140

HE Christian, like his Lord of old,
Must look for foes and trials here:
Yet may the weakest saint be bold,
With such a friend as Jesus near.
The lion’s roar need not alarm,
O Lord, the feeblest of Thy sheep;
The serpent’s venom cannot harm,
While Thou art nigh to watch and keep.
Before, when dangers round me spread,
I cried to Thee, Almighty Friend;
Thou coveredst my defenseless head;
And shall I not on Thee depend?
O refuge of the poor and weak,
Regard Thy suffering people’s cry;
Humble the proud, uphold the meek,
And bring us safe to Thee on high.
WHAT IS CONVERSION?
|
C |
ONVERSION lies in turning men from idols to serve the living God: not merely from idols of silver and gold, of wood and stone, as formerly, but from the idols of a man’s own heart, his lusts and corruptions with respect to which the language of a converted sinner is, “What have I to do anymore with idols?” Hosea 14:8. This is a blessing bestowed in conversion: “Unto you first God, having raised up his Son Jesus, sent him to bless you, in turning away every one of you from his iniquities” Acts 3:26. In redemption Christ turns away iniquities from His people by bearing them and making satisfaction for them. And in conversion, He, by His Spirit and grace, turns them from their iniquities. He turns them from the love of them to an hatred of them, even of vain thoughts, as well as of sinful actions; from the service and drudgery of them to the service of righteousness; from the power and dominion of them and subjection to them, and from a course of living in them to a life of holiness; and from the paths of sin to the paths of truth and uprightness.

THE RESURRECTION OF CHRIST
“And if Christ be not raised, your faith is vain; ye are yet in your sins.”
1 Corinthians 15:17

he fact that Christ rose from the grave is not only an historic reality, it is fundamental to the Gospel. The Scriptures teach that Christ was born of a virgin, and lived a perfect life in submission to God’s holy law, and died a sacrificial, bloody death in order to establish righteousness on behalf of sinners to whom God the Father has eternally decreed salvation. What the Father purposed, the Son accomplished! He put away the sin of His people by His obedience unto death, and the Father then and there declared every one for whom He died to be justified (acquitted of all guilt). How do we know? He raised Him from the dead! Romans 4:25- ‘Who was delivered for (because of) our offences, and was raised again for (because of) our justification.’ The substance of Gospel faith is that Christ died and rose again, putting away sin, and establishing righteousness once for all, proven by Christ’s resurrection, ascension, and sitting down at the right hand of God’s majesty on high, His work completed, Heb. 1:3. To take away His resurrection is to deny that His death accomplished salvation. To do that is to make Gospel faith vain, and therefore leave sinners without any remedy for their sin. Thank God that He raised His Son, testifying that full satisfaction has been made for guilty sinners, and the Word revealed in the heart gives faith to look to the Risen Savior, and REST in Him who finished the work! THE WORK OF THE HOLY SPIRIT IN US
|
T |
HE work of the Holy Spirit in us is a marvelous, powerful, and necessary work of sovereign grace. It is part of what we call the three R’s of salvation – Ruined by the fall; Redeemed by the blood of Christ; and Regenerated by the Holy Spirit. Christ told Nicodemus, “Ye must be born again” John 3:7. Why is this necessary? It is because “that which is born of the flesh is flesh; and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit” John 3:6. As we are born naturally of Adam, we are spiritually dead with no ability or desire to come to God through Christ. It is only by the Spirit of God that we receive spiritual life. Spiritual life is the fruit and result of Christ’s work for us on the cross to redeem us and justify us by His grace, based on His righteousness imputed. Where God has imputed Christ’s righteousness to a sinner, He sends His Spirit to give that sinner life and faith to believe in Christ. BILL PARKER, Ashland, KY
CANCER, GO TO THAT CHILD!
|
I |
have much inward fever, making me restless and uneasy at night, but I have been led to see this fever as my Father’s servant, obeying His will. God says, “Fever, go to that child, and work in her frame, and disturb her rest;” and it comes, but all is in covenant love. HE has said also, “Cancer, go to that child, and wound her flesh, and sap her strength;” and it has come, and is doing His work and His will- - but all is love.
The waters of affliction have risen higher this month, but, safe in my living Ark, I am unhurt. It is sharp to flesh and blood, but right to faith. I am not always light and bright in my feelings; but oh! What blessed security and solidity do I find in my precious Rock! There I am, come what may! Angels might envy my joy- - joy in the flood and in the flame. Hallelujah!
“The LORD is my rock, my fortress, and my savior; my God is my rock, in whom I find protection. HE is my shield, the strength of my salvation, and my stronghold.” Psalm 18:2 – RUTH BRYAN (dying of cancer)
DEATH
|
E |
lizabeth, Queen of England, the idol of society and the leader of European fashion, when on her death-bed turned to her lady in waiting, and said: “O my God! It is over. I have come to the end of it – the end. To have only one life, and to have done with it! To have loved, and loved, and triumphed; and now to know it is over! One may defy everything else but this.” And as the listener sat watching, in a few moments more the face whose slightest smile had brought her courtiers to their feet, turned into a mask of lifeless clay, and returned the anxious gaze of her servant with nothing more than a vacant stare. Such was the end of one whose meteoric course had been the envy of half the world. It could not be said that she had “finished” anything, for with her all was “vanity and vexation of spirit.” How different with the end of the Savior! “I have glorified Thee on the earth: I have finished the work which Thou gavest Me to do,” John 17:4.
