CALL TO WORSHIP
(Tune: ‘O God Our Help in Ages Past,’ #10)
Words by Isaac Watts, 1674-1748

ehold the glories of the Lamb,
Amidst His Father’s throne;
Prepare new honors for His name,
And songs before unknown.
Let elders worship at His feet;
The church adore around;
With vials full of odors sweet,
And harps of sweeter sound.
He shall fulfill Thy great decrees;
The Son deserves it well;
Lo! In His hands the sovereign keys
Of heaven, and death, and hell.
Now to the Lamb that once was slain,
Be endless blessings paid;
Salvation, glory, joy remain
For ever on thy head.
Thou hast redeemed our souls with blood,
Hast set the prisoners free,
Hast made us kings and priests to God,
And we do reign with Thee.
A WAY THAT SEEMETH RIGHT, BUT…
“There is a way that seemeth right unto a man, but the end thereof are the ways of death,” Proverbs 14:12.

top, oh soul, and consider what way art thou in? That which seems right in thy own sight, or that which God declares is right in His? Remember, the way of a righteous fool is right IN HIS OWN EYES, but he who hearkens unto counsel is wise- Proverbs 12:15. Jesus is our Counselor. Hearken unto Him! He says, ‘I am THE WAY,’-John 14:6. The only way, exclusive of every other way, of pardon from God, peace and acceptance with God, justification before God, and enjoyment of God. This is the good old way: walk therein, and ye shall find rest for your souls, Jeremiah 6:16.

THE DECEASE HE SHOULD ACCOMPLISH
“…and spake of his decease which he should accomplish at Jerusalem,”
Luke 9: 31

hould we ever treat lightly the death that our Lord Jesus accomplished at Jerusalem? He clearly did not consider it a light matter. To speak of Christ’s death in any other way than an accomplishment is to miss its very glory. He did not die as a martyr, but as the Substitute of sinners given Him from eternity by the Father- John 17:3. His death was not a failure in any sense, but an execution of God’s justice upon Him of the penalty due His people, that God might by the just justifier of them upon His completion of the work. When was the work accomplished? Scripture says, ‘at Jerusalem.’ Do words matter? Then let us bow to the Word. Although purposed in eternity, and revealed through faith, it was ACCOMPLISHED at Jerusalem, Galatians 4:4.

CAN YOU IMAGINE IT IN ANY OTHER WAY?

inners who are privileged to hear the true Gospel message are to be ENCOURAGED by the REALITY of RECONCILIATION. It is a Biblical fact. God has RECONCILED a people (of every kindred, tongue, and nation) unto Himself by Christ AT THE CROSS. "God WAS in Christ reconciling the world unto him". NOT the world without EXCEPTION, but the world without DISTINCTION (i.e. those from all over the world). For them "old things have passed away, behold, all things are become new." They are NO LONGER justly condemned but everlastingly justified. That ought to ENCOURAGE every sinner who hears what God's Word says about reconciliation.
And! Sinners under this message should be ENCOURAGED by the TIMING of RECONCILIATION. Having heard this message, (and carefully considered it in light of what you once believed), can you imagine God RECONCILING His people at any other time than AT THE CROSS? Can you imagine Him attributing to his people benefits that Christ had NOT YET paid for, (i.e. while the debt was still owed) and NOT attributing to them the benefits Christ purchased by His blood (withholding these PURCHASED benefits from Christ's sheep until He did something IN them)? We ought to be ENCOURAGED by the work Christ ACCOMPLISHED AT THE CROSS.
But! The greatest ENCOURAGEMENT comes from the BASIS of RECONCILIATION. Can you imagine God DISCHARGING sin on any other basis than the just satisfaction Christ made to God's law and justice by His obedience unto death, declaring any sinner righteous on any BASIS other than the righteousness of God revealed by Christ's resurrection from the dead?

FAITH CANNOT JUSTIFY BECAUSE IT IS NOT OUR RIGHTEOUSNESS
|
O |
ur faith, that is to say, our believing cannot justify us, because it is not our righteousness. For not any thing can be our righteousness or justification unto us, but that which is made sin and curse for us, only Christ is both these to His: "He hath made him to be sin for us, Christ hath redeemed us from the curse of the law, being made a curse for us," Gal. 3:13. Therefore he "bare our sins, and was wounded for us, that he might bring us to God," 1 Pet. 1:18. Nothing can justify us, but that which is our reconciliation, our righteousness and peace. Nothing can procure peace to us but that which justifies us and covers our iniquities that "separate us from God," Isa. 57 and 59:2- "For he is our peace, who hath broken down the middle wall of partition between us," Eph. 2:14, 15, 17.
Can faith do these things for us? Surely not. Christ became our righteousness by His obedience. Or more strictly by His obedience to the death of the Cross: Col. 1:20, Eph. 2:16. God did ordain Him to be our righteousness, 1 Pet. 1:18-20, and therefore, we ought to look upon Christ to "be our righteousness," because God "hath made him" so: 1 Cor. 1:30, 2 Cor. 5:21. Nothing can redeem us, and set us free from bondage but Christ: Heb. 2:14, 15; Heb. 9:26, 28. Nothing can present us holy, and unblamable, but Christ: Col. 1:22. Therefore, Christ's Testament declares that all the parts of our redemption, justification, reconciliation, and salvation, are attributed to Christ's blood, to His death: Col. 1:20, Eph. 2:16, Heb. 9 and 10, and Rom. 5:9. The "slaying of our enmity," the destroying of "our spiritual enemies," etc. is attributed to "His Cross." Therefore, the word of the Gospel is called the Word or preaching of the Cross, 1 Cor. 1:18, 23. The main and special thing the Apostle desired to know, and drove at in all his Preaching, was nothing else but "Jesus Christ and him crucified."
Samuel Richardson, 1647
