CALL TO WORSHIP

(Tune: # 75- ‘Abide With Me’)

Words based on Psalm 147 by Isaac Watts

P

raise ye the Lord, ‘tis good to raise

Our hearts and voices in His praise;

His nature and His works invite

To make this duty our delight.

The Lord builds up Jerusalem

And gathers nations to His name;

His mercy melts the stubborn soul,

And makes the broken spirit whole.

He formed the stars, those heavn’ly flames

He counts their numbers, calls their names;

His wisdom’s vast, and knows no bound,

A deep where all our thoughts are drown’d.

Great is our Lord, and great His might:

And all His glories infinite:

He crowns the meek, rewards the just,

And treads the wicked to the just.

JESUS CHRIST THE RIGHTEOUS

“My little children, these things write I unto you, that ye sin not. And if any man sin, we have an advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous:” 1 John 2:1

B

lessed be God!  All praise to wondrous grace!  Earth hath seen ‘Jesus Christ the righteous.”  His faultless obedience was wrought out for His Church.  It is their beauteous robe.  It is their glorious raiment.  It is IMPUTED to them, as their own deed.  It is their title to the heavenly kingdom.  It is their rich adornment through eternal ages.  It fades not with revolving years.  It cannot change its changeless hue.  It ever shines bright as very Deity.  Believer, clasp it.  Delight in it.  Trust in it. It cannot fail.  Commend it.  It exceeds all praise.  Glory in it.  It is worthy.  But its full beauty you will never see, till heaven’s day reveals it.  Its perfect worth you cannot know, till you receive the crown, which it has earned—the throne, which is its due.  Your best righteousness is but a filthy rag.  Your too frequent falls bespatter you with mire.  But your Jesus is unsullied purity.  And all His purity decks you.  The hands, which wrought, bestow it.  In it you triumph.  In it you reign for ever.                             HENRY LAW 1797-1884

A UNILATERAL CONTRACT

I

n insurance, there are what are called ‘Conditional contracts’ and ‘Unilateral contracts.’  A conditional contract makes fulfillment conditioned on the policy owner performing certain acts, such as paying the premium and furnishing proof of any claim.  There are rules for both the insured and insurer. However, in a unilateral contract, only one side writes the provision and must live up to its agreement.

                Thank God that salvation is a UNILATERAL CONTRACT.  God Himself has written on behalf of sinners whom He has named as beneficiaries, and He has paid it in full already by the death of His Son, thereby making them heirs and joint heirs by His grace alone, His righteousness being imputed to them because CHRIST fulfilled all of the conditions!  HEBREWS 9:15-16.                                                                                                                                                             KEN WIMER

HEIRS OF THE KINGDOM

“Then shall the King say unto them on his right hand, Come, ye blessed of my Father, inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world:” Matthew 25:32-34

T

he King DECLARES that those whom He “set on his right hand” are “blessed of His Father”.   The King also DECLARES that these are “HEIRS of the Kingdom of heaven”.  They are HEIRS.  They did not do anything to OBTAIN their place in this kingdom.  Nor, did they do anything to DESERVE their place in this kingdom.  God, the Father, PURPOSED this kingdom and CHOSE those who would inherit this kingdom.  God, the Son ESTABLISHED this kingdom in Righteousness and BOUGHT the right of every inhabitant of this kingdom with His own blood.  Their inheritance of this kingdom is the product of God’s Sovereign Mercy and the work of Christ FOR them ALONE.

Christ is the heir and those IN HIM are joint heirs with Him.  Look at Rom 8: 14-17.  These are made to know that Christ established this kingdom and obtained it FOR them by His obedience unto death.  And, that it is theirs ONLY by INHERITANCE.

3. It is a kingdom prepared FOR THEM specifically, for them ALONE, FOR THEM and NOT for those on the other hand.  It is a kingdom prepared FOR THEM “from the foundation of the world”.  I.e Their FINAL end, their FINAL state (eternal life) was DETERMINED by God the Father (BEFORE the world began).  Now!  If their FINAL end and state is DETERMINED, then, the FINAL end and state of those on the left hand was also DETERMINED.

HOW TO LOVE OUR ENEMIES

L

et us witness God's glory in the Gospel, not allowing men to draw their own conclusions, but declaring God's conclusions concerning Himself, concerning Christ and the way of salvation based on His imputed righteousness alone; concerning the state of condemnation; the idolatry and dead works of all men by nature. God's Gospel reveals Christ's righteousness that entitles sinners to all of salvation, and it exposes the sin that deceives us all by nature, the sin of thinking that anything could recommend us unto God or fit us for heaven but the imputed righteousness of Christ revealed in the Gospel by the Spirit, Romans 1:17. The Gospel calls sinners to repentance towards God and faith in Christ. We need not modify it to remove its offense aimed against religious pride and self-righteousness.

We must realize that when we have done all we can to be kind and patient, gentle, meek, and tolerant, the world will still hate us and not see us this way when we refuse to speak peace apart from Christ, the only peace. The world will hate and persecute those who follow Christ (John 3:19; 7:7: 15:8--16:3). This hatred may only manifest itself as they simply scorn our message, but it is still hatred. Those who say that lost men will not listen to our doctrine until they see our love need to realize that the world will not see and recognize true Christians and the love of Christ in them (1 John 3:1). The world did not recognize the love of our Lord who is Love incarnate. We are to love our lost neighbors, but love will not promote them in a false religion that leads to eternal damnation. Let us love them enough to tell them the truth and pray for their salvation.

UNBELIEF AND FAITH

U

nbelief is the EVIDENCE that a soul is lost, and not the reason that this is so.  And again, ‘he that believeth on the Son hath everlasting life,’ shows that this is the EVIDENCE of our salvation, and not the means of it. [Christ alone is the means, Ed.] R. J. BALDWIN
