od passed by His people, gathered all their sins together, their sins of omission and commission, against light and against knowledge, in principle and in practice, and placed them all to the account of His Son.  He drew His divine sword, and demanded full satisfaction; and if an iota had been left unanswered,  justice must have damned the whole elect.  But the blessed Redeemer fully cancelled every demand.  He bore the penal wrath, paid for all sin, and “put it away by the sacrifice of himself.”  And h\He wrought out a righteousness which He did not want for His own use.  He wrought out one to give away- to give to them who had none.  And God takes this righteousness, claps it upon the ungodly, and says, “Thou art just in this righteousness.”  And thus He justifies the ungodly” in the perfect obedience of His Son.                                          WILLIAM GADSBY
 

TOLERANCE WITHOUT COMPROMISE

                                                                            “If it be possible, as much as lieth in you, live peaceably with all men,”  Romans 12:18

any religious wars down through history were started over one group trying to dictate and legislate a particular form of worship, and impose its requirements on everyone alike.  Catholic, Protestant, Baptist, and Muslims alike have all been guilty.  Military campaigns have been waged in the name of Christ, initiated with the reading of the Psalms, and whole numbers of populations slaughtered under the banner of the ‘Christian’ flag.  The question is, “Has God so ordained that the truth be so imposed or legislated?”

1.                   Our Lord Himself answered the misgivings of those in His day who thought He should overthrow the Roman government and establish His kingdom. In John 18:36 we read His words, “My kingdom is not of this world: if my kingdom were of this world, then would my servants fight, that I should not be delivered to the Jews: but now is my kingdom not from hence.”

2.                   As much as is possible, we are to live peaceably with all men.  We are not to avenge ourselves, but rely wholly on the Judge of all who said, ‘Vengeance is mine, I will repay saith the Lord,’ Romans 12:19.  The Lord’s saints look to Him, and endeavor to live peaceably in the neighborhoods, towns, cities, and countries, where they dwell.  The grace of God teaches us to live quietly where the Lord has put us, and do all to promote peace by lives of submission to Christ and His Gospel (in all godliness and honesty- 1Timothy 2:2).  As the Scripture says, “if it be possible,” even with our enemies.

3.                   Knowledge of the truth does not come by legislation, education, or reformation, but by REVELATION.  Imposing laws to take away from others the right to worship as they will cannot thereby cause them to seek the truth.  Punishing others because they do not worship according to the truth is not the way of bringing them to bow.  Not by might, nor by power, but by my Spirit,” saith the LORD of hosts.  It is by the faithful preaching of the cross of the Lord Jesus that God is pleased to call out sinners whom Christ has redeemed- 1 Corinthians 1:18.

While we may not agree with others who do not know the truth of God’s Gospel of grace in Christ Jesus, and must clearly and plainly point out the error of any doctrine that is contrary to the clear revelation of Scripture, yet we must not use any other means than the written Word of God to defend the cause of Christ. Although they may oppose us for the truth’s sake, yet we do not treat them as our enemies, but God’s, and therefore pray for them that He might be merciful and gracious to them, as He was to us, pointing them to the ONLY ONE by whom God the Father has saved any sinner- the blood and righteousness of the Lord Jesus, established, imputed and accepted of Him upon completion of Christ’s work at the cross.                                 KEN WIMER

 

 

CHRIST’S DEATH- A SATISFACTION TO GOD

n the mutual compact and agreement between God and Christ, we find God the Father imposing, and Christ submitting to this satisfaction. 

1.       The Father imposes, by charging the sins of His elect upon Jesus Christ, “The Lord hath laid on Him the iniquity of us all,” Isaiah 53:6.  NOT THE SINS THEMSELVES, NOT THE EVIL IN THEM, BUT THE GUILT AND PENALTY BELONGING TO THEM.  This God laid upon His Son, and charged it upon Him.  He charged it as a creditor charges the debt upon the surety, requiring satisfaction. 

2.       Christ undertook it.  “He was oppressed, and He was afflicted,” Isaiah 53:7, or as some translate, “It was exacted, and He answered,” I.e. God the Father required satisfaction for sin, and Jesus Christ as our Surety, answered in our behalf- “He bare the sin of many,” v. 12.  He bore them as a porter that bears the burden for another which he is not able to stand under.  He bore them by undergoing the punishment which was due for them.  He bore them as our Surety, submitting Himself unto the penalty which we had deserved, and by that means He made satisfaction to the justice of God.  Surely Christ’s death was not only for confirmation of His doctrine, but for satisfaction to God. J

ustification in the conscience is not justification itself, but only the knowledge of it. It is necessary to our comfort. Justification depends not upon our knowledge of it, nor assurance of it. That, which saves us, justifies us. And that, which justifies us, saves us. That is only the Lord Jesus Christ, Who is our justification and salvation, and all in all.
