CALL TO WORSHIP

 (Tune: ‘#48- ‘His Matchless Worth’)

W

hen Jesus would His grace proclaim,

He calls the simple, blind, and lame

To come and be His guest;

Such simple folk the world despise;

Yet simple folk do realize

In Him is all their rest

In Him is ALL their rest!

They view the truth of Jesus’ light,

Of Jesus’ blood, and Jesus’ might,

Which others cannot view;

They walk in Christ, the living Way

And trust no other righteousness

Which others cannot do,

Which others cannot do.

They all declare, ‘I nothing am,

My life is bound up in the Lamb,

My strength and might are His;

My worth is all in Jesus found,

He is my Rock, my anchor-ground,

And all my hope of bliss,

And all my hope of bliss.’

GLORYING IN THE CROSS OF CHRIST

P

aul never forgot the glory in which the Son of God appeared to him. He viewed this glory in connection with the cross on which his sins had been expiated. In it he beheld the exceeding sinfulness of sin; in it, connected with Christ’s resurrection and ascension, he saw the proof of all his sins having been forgiven. He was now begotten again to a lively hope of an unfading inheritance, but he viewed the cross as the center from which every spiritual and heavenly blessing flowed, and it alone was henceforth the ground of his boasting. Here he saw justice fully satisfied.  On the cross he had died with his glorious Lord and Master. He knew he must follow him to the dust of death, but he also knew that he should have fellowship with Him in his victory over the grave.

JAMES HALDANE

 THE ONLY REMEDY FOR PRIDE

“And being found in fashion as a man, He humbled Himself, and became obedient unto death, even the death of the cross.’              Philippians 2:8

N

ot only is the life and death of our Lord Jesus Christ a standing rebuke to every form of pride to which we are liable as sinners, but, it is also the only remedy!  It took nothing more or less than the Lord Jesus Christ humbling Himself and becoming obedient unto death, for God to put away every liability and guilt that our pride has justly merited.  No other remedy will do.

                Someone has categorized the different types of pride as: Pride of face, pride of race, pride of place, pride of pace, and yes, even a pride of grace.  Nevertheless, pride is pride, and is the cause of many a fall, particularly among those who think that they have attained a supposed level of personal holiness and sanctification, and therefore have somehow gained victory over sin.  The Bible says simply, ‘If a man think himself to be something, when he is nothing, he deceiveth himself,’ Galatians 6:3.

                How does the humility of our Lord stand in contrast to the pride of sinners?  Consider the following ways  that someone has outlined:

How we need to be humbled at Christ’s feet, and learn of HIM, by God’s grace, Matthew 11:28!

FORGIVENESS

“And be ye kind one to another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, even as God for Christ’s sake hath forgiven you,”           Ephesians 4:32

A

 shamefaced employee was summoned into the office of the senior partner of the firm to hear his doom.  The least that he could expect was a blistering dismissal.  Even worse, he might be prosecuted, and face going to prison for years.

           The old man looked straight at him and asked him if he were guilty.  The clerk stammered out that he had no defense, and quietly waited for the impending verdict.

           “I will not prosecute you,” said the old man. I know that there is no reason in you for me not to do so because you justly deserve it, right?’  Again, all the clerk could do was to agree in silence.  The old man continued.  ‘However, out of love for you and your loved ones, I will not even dismiss you.  In spite of your wrong doing, I forgive you.’

           Surprised, overwhelmed, and broken, the clerk got up to leave, when the senior partner stopped him with one more word. ‘You are the second man who has fallen and been pardoned in this firm.  I WAS THE FIRST!’  What you have received, I received.  It is only the grace of God that keeps us both!’
