CALL TO WORSHIP

(Tune: #188 ‘I Love Thy Kingdom Lord’)

1 – O BLESS the Lord, my soul!

Let all within me join,

And aid my tongue to bless His name,

Whose favors are divine.

2 – O bless the Lord, my soul!

Nor let His mercies lie

Forgotten in unthankfulness,

And without praises die.

3 – ‘Tis He forgives thy sins;

‘Tis He relieves thy pain;

‘Tis He that heals thy sicknesses,

And makes thee young again.

4 – He crowns thy life with love,

When ransomed from the grave;

He that redeemed my soul from hell

Has sovereign power to save.

5 – ‘He fills the poor with good;

He gives the sufferers rest;

The Lord has judgments for the proud,

And justice for th’oppressed.

6 – ‘His wondrous works and ways

He made by Moses known;

But sent the world His truth and grace,

By His beloved Son.

CAN FAITH REMOVE SIN?

The case of believers being still in their sins shows that believing does not cause righteousness or justification.   That faith is not this righteousness will appear if you consider what faith is (in itself, simply so considered apart from Christ) it is no righteousness at all, much less this righteousness we speak of. The Apostle speaks of the faith of such as did truly believe. He tells them that if Christ was not raised, their faith was vain: that is, worth nothing, 1 Cor. 15:17. So that if Christ had not been the true Messiah, and so the right object for their faith, their believing could not have done them any good, for all their believing, they had been in their sins. So that faith considered apart by itself, it's like a picture without life, an empty and cold business, only to please the fancy. But if faith be filled with Christ, with light and love, it's the most powerful thing in the world, Heb. 11, Eph. 3:16.                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                     SAMUEL RICHARDSON- 1646

WHAT ABOUT MY SINS?

We should never forget that our justification before God was wholly accomplished ‘through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus,’ Romans 3:24.  When the justified, regenerated sinner’s conscience cries out, ‘What about my sins, the answer of the very Word of God is, ‘They are no more!’  Either the Lord Jesus Christ once for all put away my sin or He didn’t!

          Were they merely passed over, or did Christ merely atone for (cover) them?  Is God merely ignoring them?  And what about God’s holiness?  Doesn’t He demand absolute satisfaction?

          No, our sins were not merely passed over, although God did forbear with the sin of His elect from the Fall to the Cross, passing over them until Christ should come and put them away, Romans 3:25.  Christ did not merely atone for the sins of His people.  Atonement was an Old Testament covering through the animal sacrifices until Christ came.  His death did not atone for sins…His people were RECONCILED (a more correct translation of Romans 5:11).

          Yes, the sin question demanded an absolute answer, and the matter was settled for God’s elect in the doing and dying of the Lord Jesus Christ, Romans 5:18.The Law demanded that sin should be punished.  This then is where redemption was accomplished and applied by the death of Christ.  The sentimental theology so prevalent today, which proclaims a god who overlooks human fault and sin, is contrary to the Word.  Redemption means deliverance through a ransom, released from a claim and judgment through an adequate settlement of the claim. Rather than overlook sin, God has sent His Son as the Substitute, and punished Him in the room and stead of beloved sinners.  What about my sins?  If Christ died for you, they are no more!  Hebrews 8:12.

“My sin, O the bliss of this glorious thought, my sin, not in part but the whole; was nailed to the cross, and I bear it no more, praise the Lord, praise the Lord, O my soul!”

WHO’S SONG?

The Song of songs, which is Solomon's. Song of Solomon 1:1

The Song of songs; The Song of the King of kings; The Song of The One who is high and lifted up; The Song of this One condescending to the one of low estate; to the one mired in the wickedness of his own way.

This wondrous Song that surpasses words, O the very concept of the One so eternally holy, suffering the death; ‘the death’ to redeem His fallen bride from the wretchedness of her own way. This glorious Song which declares of the Almighty Son of God, seeing His chosen, polluted in her own filth, having matchless compassion, He gave Himself a Ransom for her to bring her unto Himself. Yea to bring her clothed in His own righteousness, to be His for all eternity. To Him alone be all honor & glory for He doeth ALL things well!

This is truly The Song of songs; which is mine, alone! As we see in our passage it was Solomon’s alone. It is the Song of the lone sinner and his blessed Redeemer; his Lord.
