CALL TO WORSHIP
(Tune: #186 ‘The Church’s One Foundation’)
1 – ‘Tis not that I did choose Thee,
For, Lord, that could not be;
This heart would still refuse Thee
Hadst Thou not chosen me.
Thou from the sin that stained me
Hast cleansed and set me free;
Of old Thou hast ordained me
That I should live to Thee.
2 – ‘Twas sovereign mercy called me
And taught my quickened mind;
This world had else enthralled me
To heaven’s glories blind.
My heart owns none above Thee;
For Thy rich grace I thirst;
This knowing, if I love Thee,
Thou must have loved me first.
CHRIST’S CHURCH
‘…I will build my church; and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it,”
Matthew 16:18.
christ made a bold statement to His disciples: ‘I will build my church.’ The term church means called out ones. It was used of an assembly or congregation. The church is not an organization or a denomination. The church is a baptized body of believers.
In veiled language, the Lord spoke often of His church. She was the prepared ground in the parable of the sower and the seed (Matt 13:3-9). She was the treasure hid in the field and the pearl of great price (13:44-46).
His declaration to Peter tells us what His mission was. He left heaven to redeem and deliver a people from their charges of sin. He promised to assemble them together and preach the gospel to them. He promised to deliver them by the gospel and to deliver them to the gospel.
DAVID SIMPSON, Providence Church, TN
THE SON OF GOD MADE TO BE SIN
“For he hath made him to be sin for us, who knew no sin; that we might be made the righteousness of God in him.” 2 Corinthians 5:21
what a glorious truth to learn that the very Son of God on behalf of His people settled the matter of sin and righteousness upon the cross. So absolute is the work of imputation, (the sinner’s sin to Him and Christ’s righteousness to the sinner), that ALL whom Christ redeemed have ALL together been already pronounced righteous by the Eternal Judge, Ephesians 2:5,6. There is no sin laid to their charge because it was all laid to His, Isaiah 53:5, 6. There is complete righteousness before God’s law because He worked it out and the Father has imputed it to their account.
Sin was not infused in Christ, but rather charged to His account. The same is true with regard to the imputation of His righteousness. It is not infused into the sinner, but charged to his account, whereby God declares such a one righteous before Him. All for whom the Son of God was made sin, will in time be made to see that their sin put Him to death, but glorious thought, His righteousness was made to be theirs also, by grace alone. KEN WIMER
THE SUM AND SUBSTANCE OF CHRIST’S DEATH
THEREFORE, if when Christ died was the time this [justification] was to be done, and if Christ was ordained to do it, if Christ was mighty to save, if Christ took flesh to do this work, if it was the will of God that He should do it, if Christ came on purpose to do it, if our sins were laid upon Christ and He suffered the punishment, (the curse of them) if He has redeemed us, if it was prophesied of Him that He should justify many and that His work should prosper, if Christ did answer His types, if He has exceeded all the priests and sacrifices under the Law; if there needs no more offerings for sin; if Christ has done all the Law required, if Christ has done what He came to do, if we are justified by His blood, if He has made us holy, and presented us without spot, if we are free from all sin, if Christ has done all that can be done to make us just and righteous, if Christ did wash away our sins in His own blood, if Christ has said, “It is finished;” then it’s DONE, it’s DONE, it’s DONE, perfectly and completely DONE; then what I have said is fully proved namely, that Jesus Christ, by one offering, the sacrifice of Himself, when He was on the Cross, put an end to sin and so destroyed all the sins of His people for ever and presented them just, righteous, and holy, without spot before God, Col. 1:13, 14, 21; Col. 2:13,14. SAMUEL RICHARDSON– 1647
Each glorious person in the Godhead has a glorious part in our salvation. GOD THE FATHER chose, sanctified, and set us apart in Christ before the world was; GOD THE SON took our humanity into union to His personal Godhead, was made flesh, lived a perfect life, suffered and died a solemn death, rose again from the dead, and is now exalted at the right hand of the Father, ever living to make intercession for us; GOD THE SPIRIT awakened the dead and "called us with a holy calling." This call is the solemn, soul-quickening, heart-rending call of the Holy God from death to life, from darkness to light, from the power of sin and Satan to the kingdom of the Son of His love. So that, BEFORE THE WORLD WAS, the church was saved purposely by God the Father; IN TIME meritoriously by, the God-man, Christ Jesus, who now lives above, their mediator, High Priest, and advocate; and IN THE DAY OF GOD'S POWER they are saved manifestly and vitally by the "washing of regeneration, and the renewing of the Holy Spirit."
WILLIAM GADSBY, 1773-1844
