CALL TO WORSHIP

(Tune: #185- ‘Glorious Things of Thee Are Spoken’)

O my soul, what means this sadness?

Wherefore art thou thus cast down?

Let thy griefs be turned to gladness;

Bid thy restless fears be gone;

Look to Jesus, Look to Jesus!

And rejoice in His dear name [Repeat]

What though Satan’s strong temptations

Vex and tease thee day by day,

And thy sinful inclinations

Often fill thee with dismay

Thou shalt conquer, Thou shalt conquer,

Through the Lamb’s redeeming blood [Repeat]

Though ten thousand ills beset thee,

From without and from within,

Jesus says He’ll ne’er forget thee,

But does save from hell and sin

He is faithful, He is faithful,

To perform His gracious word [Repeat]

Though distresses now attend thee,

And thou tread’st  the thorny road,

His right hand shall still defend thee

Soon He’ll bring thee home to God;

Therefore praise Him, Therefore praise Him;

Praise the great Redeemer’s name [Repeat]

O that I could now adore Him

Like the heavenly host above,

Who forever bow before Him,

And unceasing sing His love!

Happy songsters, Happy songsters!

When shall I your chorus join [Repeat]

CHRIST OUR ADVOCATE

“My little children, these things write I unto you, that ye sin not.  And if any man sin, we have an advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous,” 1 John 2:1

T

here is probably no area where our conscience, Satan, or enemies of the truth will bring accusation against us than to bring the law to mind against our sin.  These adversaries of our souls continue to bring litigation against any of the Lord’s children over their sin, even though case after case has been thrown out already by the Supreme judge, because the record shows that their sin has already been put away, and their record cleared of all charges by the blood payment and imputed righteousness in Christ’s sacrificial death for His people.

                As if our flesh were not an enemy enough to accuse us, Satan Himself, the accuser of the brethren before God, stirs up the flesh in us and brings what he considers to be rightful charges against our consciences day and night, Revelation 12:10.  Nevertheless, let him accuse, and bring the worst charges that he will.  Our rest is that no matter how true the charge, there is an advocate with the Father, JESUS CHRIST THE RIGHTEOUS.  The very presence of Christ in heaven, as the Great High Priest, is sufficient case before the throne of justice to dismiss any litigation against any of God’s redeemed and justified ones.

                Dear, woeful, child of God, could our case be in any better hands than the Wonderful Counselor (advocate) of God’s court?  His true and faithful intercession, based on His shed blood does prevail over any and all of Satan’s accusations.

  1. From eternity, He has been the eternal, appointed, advocate of sinners whom the Father chose and placed in His hands.
  2. In time He came and fulfilled all of law and justice on behalf of His chosen race, and because of His finished work, every sinner He came to represent stands acquitted, and their Representative freely intercedes on their behalf, without money or price required of them.
  3. Our plea is never our innocence, or sincerity, or any supposed goodness.  No, we are accepted in the Beloved because HE owned our guilt and vileness, and it is that full payment of our debt that has forever cancelled any debt we owed, even while we were yet sinners, and in darkness and blindness.  It was not God’s wrath upon us until we believed, but rather the love of God and justice satisfied, when revealed in the heart that caused us to believe!  Justice said, ‘I am satisfied, they are forgiven.’  Truth has the sentence of acquittal recorded, and Mercy declares, ‘Rest in Jesus Christ the Righteous.’

A CHRIST WROUGHT SALVATION

C

hrist is the ground of our victory; by His blood are we cleansed, by His righteousness are we justified.  I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ; it is the power of God unto salvation, to every one that believeth.

            Christ has wrought out a complete salvation.  In his Person, in His character, in His obedience, in His agonizing death, He hath made us perfect.  He who was without sin took upon Him our nature, and became sin for us, who knew no sin, that we might be made the righteousness of God to Him.  And all this was to satisfy justice.  Without Christ there is no salvation.  There is none other name given under heaven whereby we must be saved.  Take away Christ and God could not save a soul.  His holy law forbids it; holiness forbids it; justice forbids it.  Christ is the all and in all of a sinner’s salvation.  Talk about cleansing your own heart and saving yourself!  Why, as I often say, if you had all the holiness in the world, separate from Christ, it would not save you.

            God demands a perfect obedience; and in Christ alone is that perfect obedience found.  He is our Surety; and , though a debtor were not able to pay one mite of His just debt, yet if His Surety has paid it, it would be free.  Therefore, Christ’s people are free.

WILLIAM GADSBY, 1773-1854

GOOD HOPE THROUGH GRACE

“Now our Lord Jesus Christ Himself, and God, even our Father, which hath loved us, and hath given us everlasting consolation and good hope through grace, comfort your hearts, and stablish you in every good word and work.”                                               2 Thessalonians 2:16,17
