CALL TO WORSHIP
(Tune: # 236- ‘Amazing Grace’)
Thy purchased people, gracious Lamb,
Thou never canst forget;
Thy piercing nails have wrote their name
Upon Thy hands and feet.
Satan, in vain, with rage assails
Thy dear peculiar ones;
For them Thy righteousness avails;
And justifies alone.
Vainly against the sheep he strives,
And wars with the Most High;
Their glorious Head for ever lives,
Nor can His members die.
Lord Christ shall His elect avenge,
Nor from His own remove;
Nor cancel His decree, nor change
His everlasting love.
JUSTIFIED FREELY BY GOD’S GRACE
“Being (having been) justified (declared righteous) freely (without a cause) by His grace through the redemption (freedom obtained by the payment of the ransom price required) that is in Christ Jesus.”(Rom.3:24) God the Holy Spirit, through the Apostle Paul, tells us plainly here that the matter of justification (God legally declaring all His elect righteous) was worked out completely through the payment price Christ made at Calvary. Paul tells every sinner who is struggling to be justified by their works, that there is absolutely no conditions for them to fulfill in order to be justified, not even the condition of faith. Oh, God’s elect do believe! But they believe all of their justification rested solely on Christ’s perfect satisfaction at Calvary to God’s law and justice as their Substitute and Surety. This, dear sinner, is the good news the Gospel of God so clearly declares-“Come unto me, all ye that labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.”(Matt.11:28) Christ alone can promise sinners “rest” because He fulfilled all the requirements of the Father by His obedience unto death. Think about the words of this hymn-“Jesus PAID IT ALL. All to Him I owe. Sin had left a crimson stained. HE washed it white as snow.” May you find in Christ that “peace that passeth all understanding.”

A GOSPEL MEMORIAL
“Verily I say unto you, Wheresoever this gospel shall be preached throughout the whole world, this also that she hath done shall be spoken of for a memorial of her,” Mark 14:9
The words, “Verily I say unto you,” are to get our attention and cause us to listen. A woman approaching Christ to anoint Him with precious ointment, moved by the Spirit of God, is here commended by our Lord because of the significance of what her actions symbolized. The message that the pouring out of the precious ointment signifies is the sum of the Gospel of righteousness. It concerns not only the glory of the One anointed, but the importance of why He came and the doctrine of His death, burial, and resurrection. As glorious as is the incarnation of Christ, and all the actions of his life, and whatever he did for the good of men, yet it is His dying for sin, and making full payment for it, satisfying law and justice, fulfilling the law, destroying death, putting away the sins of His people and rising again because of their justification having been completed, that is the memorial before God. This is the very message of the Gospel and its glory, and nothing else, just as nothing else mattered than what the spikenard symbolized to Christ in His death. These words of Christ show that "this" Gospel should be preached and it is to this end that He gave the commission and gifts to his disciples. It continues to be the message of those that the Lord has raised up in our day to preach the Gospel. It is God’s ordained means for the conversion of sinners, the edification of saints, and glorifying his name in the world- Romans 1:16.
Our Lord said, “There shall also this, that this woman hath done, be told for a memorial of her”- It is not a memorial to her faith, love, and gratitude, as some might try to glorify. God given faith never looks to itself as having any merit. Neither does any love and gratitude that we may show to Christ. If there is any, God graciously gave it to us in order to honor His Son-1 Corinthians 4:7. Rather, it is the memory of our Lord Jesus that she sought to honor, glorifying His death and burial, by which her God-given hope was that her sins would thereby be put away, and she declared righteous, having the merits of His righteous obedience imputed to her upon completion of Christ’s death. It is in this same way that our Lord holds all of His justified ones in remembrance, and blesses them to continue to honor His name.

A NEEDFUL VIEW OF THE SAVIOR
When the Lord is pleased in any measure to bow down His ear to hear our prayer; when He is pleased to make His word sweet and powerful in any degree to our souls; to give us a sight and sense of our interest in the precious blood of the Lamb; and to deliver our souls from the hand of the enemy---then we can see and feel and know what a great salvation the Lord Jesus Christ has wrought out; and we are brought to see and feel that nothing but such a salvation as He has accomplished, and none but such a Savior as the Lord Jesus Christ is, can really suit and save our soul.
The foundation of every sigh, of every cry, of every groan, of every wish, of every desire, of every true breath of prayer is, and experiential acquaintance with the disease [of sin] in its various branches, and a knowledge, an internal knowledge of the depth of the fall, as made manifest in our wretched heart. Thus, when the Lord blesses our souls, and visits us with the discovery of His goodness and love, ---then, comparing what we are, and what we have been, with the riches of His mercy and grace, how it exalts His salvation and sacrifice, and the love, blood, and grace of the Lord Jesus Christ in our eyes! J.C. PHILPOT, 1849
THE SACRIFICE OF HIMSELF
“Now once in the end of the world hath he appeared to put away sin by the sacrifice of himself,” Hebrews 9:26.
These rich words still follow me. That word “sin” feels weighty to a sensible sinner. But oh! That word “Himself!” seems a million times weightier! “Himself!” the mighty God, the precious Man Christ Jesus! “Himself!” by whom all things were created, and for whom they exist! “Himself!” whose smile is heaven, whose frown is hell! “Himself!” whom all angels worship, and all devils obey! “Himself!” the sacrifice! Another such sacrifice could not be found! Sins deep as hell and high as heaven cannot overmatch it, for it is infinite! Sins of scarlet and crimson dye cannot resist its power, for it makes them whiter than snow! Gleanings from Letters of Ruth Bryan, 1805-1860
