CALL TO WORSHIP

 (Tune: #217-‘Jesus, Thy Blood and Righteousness’)

J

esus, my Lord, my life, my ALL,

Prostrate before Thy throne I fall;

Fain would my soul look up and see

My hope, my heaven, my all in Thee.

Here in this world of sin and woe,

I’m filled the tossings to and fro;

Burdened with sin, and fears oppressed,

With nothing here to give me rest.

Without Thy peace and presence, Lord,

Not all the world can help afford.

O do not frown my soul away,

But turn my darkness into day.

I long to hear Thy pardoning voice;

O speak, and bid my soul rejoice;

Say, “Peace, be still; look up and live;

Life, peace, and heaven are mine to give.”

Then, filled with grateful, humble love,

My soul in praise would soar above;

And with delightful joy record

The wondrous goodness of the Lord.

FREELY

“Freely ye have received, freely give, “Matthew 10:8

W

hat have we freely received from the Lord, who are His elect and redeemed ones? We have ALL things of God in Christ by His pure, sovereign, grace alone.  Have we repented of dead works and any notion of having any contribution to our salvation?  It is only by His grace.  Do we have faith in, hope on, and love to Christ and Him crucified?  But of Him are ye in Christ who was made unto us wisdom, righteousness, sanctification and redemption,” 1 Corinthians 1:30.  As we are made to rest in and enjoy the blessing of justification from condemnation, pardon from guilt, and sanctification from our ungodliness by the imputed righteousness of God in Christ’s death, we freely give (declare) this glorious message of grace to others, with the sure hope that those for whom Christ died will be brought into the same faith of Him who died for them, He having worked out their righteousness for them.  Have you so freely received?  Freely give, testifying the message of grace without conditions or requirements bestowed on sinners forgiven and justified by Christ’s death alone.       KEN WIMER, Shreveport, LA

WHEN YOUR CHILDREN ASK

“And it shall come to pass, when your children shall say unto you, What mean ye by this service? That ye shall say, It is the sacrifice of the LORD'S Passover…”                                                   Exodus 12:26, 27

W

hat is the meaning of the Lord’s Passover?  What did it mean to the children of Israel and what is it’s meaning for us, the Lord’s children today?

1.                   They were to tell their children “it is the sacrifice of the Lord’s Passover.  By the killing and sacrificing of this Lamb, we keep in remembrance the work of wonder and grace which God did for our Fathers when He slew the first born of the Egyptians, to deliver us out of bondage, even though we were guilty of sins ourselves against the Lord God, for which we also might justly have suffered, as the Egyptians. Yet, God graciously appointed and accepted the family sacrifice of the Lamb instead of the firstborn, as with Abraham, the ram instead of Isaac, and therefore in the household where the Lamb was slain, the firstborn were saved.  It is because of the Lord’s mercies that we are not consumed.” This is what Israel would be pointed to consider- “old mercies to us and to our Fathers were not to be forgotten, but had always in remembrance, that God may be praised and faith in HIM encouraged.”

2.                   More importantly, they were to look forward to the sacrifice of the Lord’s Lamb, as a promise of the great sacrifice of the Lamb of God, in the fullness of time, when He would make an everlasting reconciliation for His Church.  Christ our Passover was sacrificed for us, 1 Corinthians 5:7.  His death was our life as the Lamb slain from the foundation of the world, Romans 5:10.  Moses kept the Passover by faith in Christ, for Christ was the end (accomplishment) of the Law for righteousness, Romans 10:4.  This is what was important for the children of Israel to tell their children when asked, to look forward to the time of Christ when He would accomplish the deliverance for His own, and did accomplish it by His obedience unto death.

“But now once in the end of the world hath he appeared to put away sin by the sacrifice of himself,”                               Hebrews 9:26.

WATCHFULNESS

Matthew 26:38-46 …sleep on now, and take your rest:

S

ome think of duty and “good works” when they think of watchfulness. Watchfulness is simply being alert to your surroundings. Our watchfulness is beholding our Redeemer in the light of His word, being careful not to countenance the lies of this age. May we by His grace be found watching at His appearing! Yet knowing that it is He who watches over us and keeps us, we have peace.

“My beloved put in his hand by the hole of the door, and my bowels were moved for him. I rose up to open to my beloved; and my hands dropped with myrrh, and my fingers with sweet smelling myrrh, upon the handles of the lock. I opened to my beloved; but my beloved had withdrawn himself, and was gone: my soul failed when he spake: I sought him, but I could not find him; I called him, but he gave me no answer.” Song of Solomon 5:4-6

Lord, help us watch with you this one hour that we walk this earth. Knowing the great care wherewith you have loved us. And the tender mercies you have for your own.

LAYNE DENTON, Scottsville, TX
