CALL TO WORSHIP

is finished! The Messiah dies!
Cut off for sins, but not His own;
Accomplished is the sacrifice;
The great redeeming work is done.
Finished our vile transgression is,
And purged the guilt of all our sin;
And everlasting righteousness
Is brought, for all His people, in.
‘Tis finished, all my guilt and pain,
I want no sacrifice beside,
For me, for me the Lamb was slain,
And I’m forever justified.
Sin, death, and hell are now subdued;
All grace is now to sinners given;
I only plead His precious blood,
For pardon, holiness, and heaven
THE PROMISED SEED
“Now to Abraham and his seed were the promises made. He saith not, and to seeds, as of many; but as of one, and to thy seed, which is Christ,” Gal. 3:16

verything about Abraham and his life was, in God’s sovereign decree and purpose, forward looking to THE SEED (Christ) who should come- Genesis 12:7. Those today who interpret the seed as being national Israel have missed Christ as clearly as the religious leaders did when our Lord came in the first century in fulfillment of God’s promise. ALL of the promises of God for SALVATION (election, redemption, justification, sanctification, regeneration, conversion, faith/repentance, and final glorification) are in HIM, ‘yea and amen!’ 2 Corinthians 1:20. Abraham himself in believing THE PROMISE, did not look to his immediate natural seed, but to Christ, and rested in God’s promise to redeem and justify him, and hoped in that imputed righteousness alone, which God promised him upon completion of Christ’s work at the cross-John 8:56, Gal. 3:18 Those who are heirs according to the same promise are taught in time to look to the same Person and Work of Christ exclusively, Gal. 3:29. MUST YET BE ACCOMPLISHED’-Luke 22:37

hat was yet to be ‘accomplished’? It was His reckoning among the transgressors. He wasn’t reckoned among the transgressors until He hung suspended between heaven and earth, between two thieves.
Consider two conclusions. First, this event was purposed before the foundation of the world and prophesied in time but not accomplished until the obedience of Christ unto death. Secondly, Christ was not a transgressor but was among the transgressors. ‘Reckon’ means impute; He was among transgressors by imputation not practice. All other scriptures are subservient to this truth. Less clear passages are understood in light of the clearest passages. Furthermore, the Lord chose this passage to declare the goal and method of His work. When the sin of the elect was reckoned to Christ, righteousness was established, accepted and imputed by the Father. How could righteousness be imputed before it was established and accepted? Of course, it couldn’t, hence there was no justification before the foundation of the world… It finds its richest and fullest meaning in our Lord’s declaration: ‘it is finished’ (Jn 19:30).Now that is plain language! That which was not ‘yet’ before the cross; was ‘finished’ by the cross!

“RAISED BECAUSE OF OUR JUSTIFICATION,” ROM 4: 25

hrist’s resurrection DECLARES His sheep to be justified. That justification DEMANDS that every sinner for whom He died be “raised” (bodily) as He was “raised”. There is TO BE that full and final resurrection (when these bodies will be changed) in the end when Christ returns, when every sinner He bought with His blood will be “raised” in final glory. That is when we will be SAVED from the (very) PRESENCE of sin. And, that is a glorious thought.
But! BEFORE that resurrection, justification DEMANDS a different resurrection, one EVERY sinner who died in Him MUST and SHALL experience IN THIS LIFE. In Romans 6:4, Paul is speaking of spiritual resurrection, being raised “to walk in newness of life”; to WALK in that JUSTIFIED “standing” Christ ACCOMPLISHED for His sheep at the cross. Just as Christ died, but did not (COULD NOT) remain dead; those who died IN HIM CANNOT remain (spiritually) dead. His righteousness imputed to them by God at the Cross brought (immediate) justification.

RIGHTEOUSNESS IN WHICH JEHOVAH HIMSELF CANNOT FIND A FLAW

e must have a righteousness in which Jehovah Himself cannot find a flaw, a righteousness which Jehovah cannot mend, a righteousness which neither sin nor Satan can mar; and unless we have on a righteousness of this nature, we can never enter into the blessedness of the world to come. Where, then, are we to find it? Eternal praises to the matchless mercy of a covenant God, we have it in the blessed Person, glorious work, and spotless obedience of the Lord Jesus Christ! And, therefore, as it was essential for Him to fulfill all righteousness for His people, He loved the Lord His God with all His heart, with all His mind, and with all His strength. He began at the beginning, and went through holily, righteously, and steadily every step of the law of God and all in justice and righteousness. He fulfilled every iota of it, and gave it immortal glory and honor. The law could only require the perfect obedience of a perfect man, but He gave it the perfect obedience of the God-Man, and stamped forever a holy dignity and majesty on it, in order to manifest that this glorious righteousness is suited to every sinner's case, to all their needs, and to honor and glorify all the perfections of God; and thus He has "forever perfected them that were sanctified," all those who were set apart for Himself. They are perfected forever in His own blessed obedience and spotless righteousness; and this righteousness which God gives shall endure forever…"My soul shall be joyful in my God; I will glory in the God of my salvation; for He hath covered me with the robe of righteousness; He hath adorned me with the garments of salvation."
WILLIAM GADSBY, from a sermon preached June 1, 1843
