CALL TO WORSHIP

(Tune: #233-‘Depth of Mercy’)

1 – Jesus is my great High Priest;

Bears my name upon His breast;

And that we may never part,

I am sealed upon His heart.

2 – All my sins were on Him laid

He most surely each has paid;

He did all my debts discharge,

And has set my soul at large.

3 – By His own redeeming blood,

He my wounded spirit cured;

Washed and made me white as snow;

Cleansed me well from top to toe.

4 – He the vail has rent in twain;

Through His flesh I enter in;

And with Him forever rest,

In the Lord’s most holy place.

5- He has bought me with His blood;

Reconciled my soul to God;

Made me meet for glory too,

And will bring me safely through.

CONSIDER CHRIST JESUS

Wherefore, holy brethren, partakers of the heavenly calling, consider the Apostle and High Priest of our profession, Christ Jesus; who was faithful to him that appointed him, as also Moses was faithful in all his house.  For this man was COUNTED WORTHY OF MORE GLORY than Moses, inasmuch as he who hath builded the house HATH MORE HONOR than the house.  For every house is builded by some man; but He that built all things is God.

HEBREWS 3:1-4

AN INFINITE SACRIFICE

 “For by one offering he hath perfected for ever them that are sanctified.”

 Hebrews 10:14

Sin is such an infinite evil against an infinite God that no single sacrifice of men or all of the sacrifices put together since the beginning of time, could ever satisfy God’s infinite justice.  Only one has, and that is the sacrifice of the Lord Jesus Christ, God’s Son.  The Bible is clear that by THAT ONE SACRIFICE He HAS PERFECTED FOREVER, them that are sanctified (set apart by God’s grace).  Perfected how?  Acquitted of all guilt because their sin was laid to Christ’s account, and His righteous obedience charged to them, once for all.  ‘The blood of Jesus Christ cleanses from all sin,’ 1 John. 1:7.

            Who are these for whom Christ died?  Sinners, chosen by God’s grace from eternity, and in time called to Him by the Spirit of God through the Gospel of Christ.  All who believe on Him in truth, as revealed in Scripture, give proof that when Christ died, He died for them.

Repent, O Sinner, of any works of your own, and trust the LORD Jesus and His infinite sacrifice for sinners alone as your only salvation, Acts 16:31.

GLORYING ONLY IN THE CROSS

“God forbid that I should glory, save in the cross of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ,”                                                       Galatians 6:14

I cannot, and, God helping me, I will not, while the Lord gives me strength to open my poor mouth, but speak well of love in God and the Holy Spirit, for it was He that laid hold of me in my mad career of sin, put a cry into my heart to cry unto God, and stopped me from going about to establish a righteousness of my own.  His invisible hand kept me from being my own murderer.  He revealed in my heart pardoning blood and IMPUTED RIGHTEOUSNESS; and some scores of times, when the enemy has come into my poor soul with such a tremendous flood of awful blasphemies against the Holy Trinity, especially against the Holy Spirit, that I have been sunk so low that at times I could see no more hope that God would ever appear in love and mercy for me than He would appear for devils, He has, bless His dear Name, lifted up again a glorious standard, and brought me up again out the horrible pit, and set my feet again upon the Rock of ages.

JOHN WARBURTON 1776-1857

ONE WAY OF SALVATION FOR ALL

Those who belonged to the election of grace before Christ came, were saved, and in the same way we are; "We believe that through the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, we shall be saved even as they," Acts 15:11.

  1. If any thing but Christ could save them, why not us also? But salvation is in Christ, Acts 4:12.
  2. Christ is said to be "the Lamb slain before the foundation of the world:" Rev. 13:8. Christ being appointed to die, "Who verily was ordained before the world," 1 Pet. 1:19, 20. God looked upon Him as slain.
  3. For the sins that were past before Christ had paid the price of them, God was content to trust Christ for payment and this is called God's forbearance, "to declare his righteousness for the remission of sins that are past through the forbearance of God:" Rom. 3:25, as a debtor may be released by the sureties undertaking to pay it before actual payment be made. So it's here. But Christ, by His death, made actual payment for all the sins of His people from the beginning to the end of the world. Therefore, God did accept Christ’s payment. So God "was in Christ, reconciling the world to himself, not imputing their trespasses unto them," 2 Cor. 5:19; Psalm. 32:1, 2.

SAMUEL RICHARDSON, 1647

THE LORD OUR RIGHTEOUSNESS

Here, dear sinner, is why Christ Jesus is called “The Lord OUR RIGHTEOUSNESS”. Christ loved God with all His heart, mind, and soul from the cradle to the grave, and He suffered sinlessly for all the sins of all God’s elect. He didn’t do it as a private person, but as the  representative and substitute of His people, and His finished work at Calvary (HIS RIGHTEOUSNESS )  has become theirs legally in God’s sight, just as much theirs as if I they  had performed it.
