BIBLE LESSON 1
TYPES AND METAPHORES
LIGHT
Genesis 1:1-5
INTRODUCTION:
- How important is light?
- Imagine what the world would be like if there were no
light
- Would you need eyes?
- Would there be such a thing as beauty?
- Would anything grow?
LESSON: How
the Lord Jesus Christ is compared to light?
- Light is something that is distinct from darkness,
vv. 2 and 3. God is light and in
him is NO darkness at all, I John 1:5. See where the Lord Jesus Christ is
called THE LIGHT in John 1:4,5.
- Light is something that makes seeing possible. Even as God commanded the light to shine
out of darkness, v. 3, the first thing made out of chaos, so regeneration
is the first work of God in the darkness of sinners hearts that God works
to give life and the knowledge of Christ, Ephesians 4:18; 2 Corinthians
4:6.
- Light is not something easy to explain. We can describe what it does better than
what it is. So it is with God,
Christ, and eternal things. They
are mysteries that are revealed in the Word, that God has caused to shine,
but without eyes, no one will see them.
The Word is the light, the eyes to see are God’s work of grace
producing faith, Luke 8:10
- The light of day or morning shines in different parts
of the world at different times by God’s decree. When it is light in one
place it is dark in others. God in
his sovereignty works in different hearts at different times according to
His purpose and will, revealing Christ in some and passing by others,
Isaiah 60: 1,2
- Darkness in Egypt and light in the
dwellings in Israel- Exodus 10:21-23
- The conversion of Saul of Tarsus- Acts 9:7 with Acts 22:9-16
- Light is the source of life and essential not only to
sight, but heat and comfort. All
natural and spiritual life is from Him, John 1:4, 8:12 with Colossians 1:12-18
APPLICATION:
1. Think
about the difference between the lights that men produce vs. the Lord Jesus as
light. Men’s act of religion and “good
works” can in no way compare to the work of God’s grace in Christ.
- Consider different ways that light protects and keeps
you from danger. If we walk in the
light (the truth as it is in Christ) we will see the path, even though
encumbered with many thorns and briars along the way. God by grace in Christ dwells in His
children and is their light of reason and wisdom.
- Just as all living plants grow toward the light, so
the true children of God ever turn to the light of God’s Word, finding
their joy, peace, and hope in Christ the WORD.
