Bible Lesson 2

Types and Metaphores

THE EARTH

Genesis 1:10-13

Introduction:

When an artist paints a picture or makes a sculpture, the artwork has a distinct pattern and style that is unique to that artist.  Artworks by famous artists are often discernible by the work itself, even if there is no signature.

The earth is a good example of the work of God, as Creator.  Everything about it bears the mark of His authorship.  We know from reading the Scripture that this world was created by God the Son, and for His glory and honor- Colossians 1:15-17.  As you look at the world with its seas, lands, trees, minerals, and beauty, it ALL is a reflection of the perfection and glory of the Creator, the Lord Jesus Christ.  Even in a fallen state, the world reflects His glory.  The only thing wrong with the earth is the sin that inhabits it through sinners.  Remove the sinner, and it is a beautiful place.

What are some of the characteristics of the image of God on this earth?

1.      It is everlastingly fruitful- Genesis 1:11.  Just as it is in God’s nature to create, so the earth has within its nature the ability to produce.

2.      It is full of minerals and life- Deuteronomy 8:9; Job 28:1-5.  Even as Christ is the source of all spiritual life and blessing.  There is everything in Him necessary to salvation and eternal life.

  1. Riches- Psalm 104:24
  2. Mercy- Psalm 119:64
  3. Glory- Isaiah 6:3

3.      It is full of God’s goodness- Psalm 33:5- There is none good but God, and all of the goodness of God is reflected in His Son as Savior and Keeper of those that He has spiritually created anew- Galatians 5:22.

4.      It was made to mourn by virtue of sin- Isaiah 24:4; Hosea 4:3; Romans 8:22-  So Christ, made of a woman in beauty, perfection, and sinlessness, was made to be sin for His people; made a curse; that out of His sufferings and death, a new heaven and earth might be brought forth in Redemption- Isaiah 65:17

CONCLUSION:

As you walk outside, and enjoy the beautiful days that the Lord gives, remember these points, and consider them.  If God gives you eyes to see the glory of Christ in this earth that He has created, you will rejoice!
