BIBLE LESSON 6

TYPES AND METAPHORES

ADAM AND CHRIST

Genesis 1:26-31

Introduction:

From a very young age most of us learned the story of how God created Adam and Eve.  However, what may not be so clear is how the creation of Adam is a type of the incarnation of the Lord Jesus Christ, and the creation of Eve from his rib, a picture of the creation of the Church of the Lord Jesus.  This is the subject of this lesson.

1. ADAM is portrayed as a type of the Lord Jesus Christ in Scripture.

(1). Romans 5:14- “Death reigned from Adam to Moses, even over them that had no sinned after the similitude of Adam’s transgression, who is the figure of him that was to come.”

(2). 1 Corinthians 15:22- “For as in Adam all die, even so in Christ shall all be made alive.”

2. Comparisons And Contrasts Of Adam To Christ

(1). Adam did not have any earthly father, nor did Christ- Luke 1:35.

(2). Adam and Christ were sons of God in a special manner.  Adam was so by creation, but Christ by eternal generation- Micah 5:2.

(3). Adam was appointed the heir of creation and put in authority over it, Gen. 1:29.  Even so, the Lord Jesus Christ is the sovereign heir of all things, so appointed by the Father, Hebrews 1:2.

(4). Adam was appointed the Representative of His race, and therefore His disobedience affected all his natural offspring, Romans 5:12,14. Even so, Christ was made the Representative of His true seed, or spiritual offspring, (the elect of God), and His OBEDIENCE is put to their account, Romans 5:15-21.

(5). Adam was made in the image of God even as Christ in the flesh is the visible image of the invisible God- Colossians 1:15.

(6). The first man Adam became a living soul. The last Adam became a life-giving spirit- I Corinthians 15:45.

(7). The Lord God put Adam to sleep and made a wife for him, Genesis 2:21-25.  He put Christ, the last Adam, to death, and from His pierced side, created the Church of His elect.
